Alternative Types of Labor-Pain Management

Whereas anesthetic techniques or medications are directed at removing the sensation of pain, nonpharmacologic or alternative methods are directed toward preventing the suffering. Labour pain is emphasized by these approaches to pain control as a side effect of the process of labor. Many hospitals provide a number of these techniques, although others may not be in all birthing facilities available and need training:

– This pertains to nonmedical care given to a woman by a doula or professional that is trained.

– Sometimes changing or walking positions can alleviate some of the pain. Nurse or your physician may suggest unique positions to try.

– The Birth Ball is a large exercise ball used to aid in comfort and movement during labor. You are able to sit or lean against the ball, which offers support that is soft and stability. The ball increases the number.

– These techniques offer reassurance, encouragement, and a feeling of love, and might be used to increase relaxation and reduce pain.

– Acupuncture involves the placement of needles at different points within the body, whereas acupressure (or Shiatsu) describes the positioning of pressure with hands or little beads in acupuncture points. – Hypnosis during labor entails selfhypnosis. Studies have demonstrated that using hypnosis does lead to less use of anesthesia and pain medication.

– This technique requires the transmission of impulses from a generator into the skin. During labour, the electrodes are placed close to the backbone, and the woman controls the degree of the current. A sensation that may decrease awareness of contraction pain is caused by TENS.

Some do suggest use of pain medication, and improved satisfaction, although studies haven’t shown a decrease in pain.

– This technique involves injecting a small amount of water to four places on the spine. It doesn’t appear to help the pain, although it was shown to reduce severe pain for 45 to 90 minutes.

– As no information suggests that one is better for pain relief compared to the other, this is a matter of personal preference.

– The theory behind this process is that white noise music, or sounds may help to reduce the perception of pain. Although not clearly beneficial for pain relief, it might help to improve pain tolerance through mood elevation, or assist the girl to breathe more rhythmically (heavy metal is most likely not the best choice, though!) .

– The use of aromatherapy seems to be on the upswing. We could only find 1 study. In that study, about half of the girls felt it was useful in reducing nausea, and pain, anxiety, while still improving their sense of health.
